History of UCLA Sailing

1932

UCLA Students John Biby, William Cooper and Richard Moore are part of Owen Churchill's crew sailing 8 Meter “Angelita” to a Gold Medal at the Los Angeles Olympics.

1945

Sailing Club established at UCLA

1950 Student Executive Council approves purchase of six sailboats by the "Tiller and Sail Club"

1954

UCLA Sailing Team wins 3rd place ICSA Dinghy Championship
Lewis J. Bedford wins ROBERT ALLAN, JR. Trophy for Low Point Skipper, B Division

1967

Sailing Club moves operation to UCLA Boathouse in Marina del Rey

1971

Sailing Club begins dues assessment to members

1973 John A. "Jack" Taylor, Class of '56, Inducted into ICSA College Sailing Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service

1975

David A. Grant, Class of '54, Inducted into ICSA College Sailing Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service

1977

Mark G. Rastello named ICSA All-American

1978

Sailing Team wins ICSA Dinghy Championship (Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy)
Mark G. Rastello wins ROBERT ALLAN, SR. Trophy for Low Point Skipper, A Division
Allan L. Jewett & Mark G. Rastello named ICSA All-Americans

1979

Phil Ramming named ICSA All-American

1981

Sailing instruction transferred from Club to Recreational Instruction Program

1983

Keel Boat sailing program offered with donation of “Checkmate” and other keelboats

1994

Development of new and expanded recreational programs in sailing

1995

Development of youth programs and outreach in sailing

2001

UCLA Sailing Team listed as an Up and Coming Program by Sailing World Magazine

2005

UCLA Sailing celebrates its 60th Anniversary

2005 Mrs. Garcia's Sailing Team Dominates the first Annual UCLA Team Race
